It went viral!

Early this summer, my brother Joel was chilling on his break in the park when he “noticed something white peaking at me from a tree.” It was a white squirrel! He charmed it down with one of the cherries he was snacking on. That post nearly broke Instagram, haha. Twenty-one million views later, I’m still like, “Wooow!” What I wouldn’t give for one of my posts to go viral like that. It got me thinking—be yourself and be consistent. My brother was being his usual self in mid-chillax mode and enjoying God’s canvas. Even the way he talked to the squirrel was my brother in a nutshell—calm, sweet, caring, and funny (without knowing it). In other words, he wasn’t performing for the camera. He was totally unaware of how that post would take off and how he would wake up to hundreds of new followers every day.

You are the white squirrel—a rare beauty. Someone who has to be careful about who you can trust and let feed you. You’ll see that the white squirrel was very cautious in approaching my brother. You can’t show yourself to or share yourself with just anyone. As we near a new season, be mindful of the last. All the mistakes, regrets, tears, and fears–learn from them, give them to God, and let go. If you trust God with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding, He promised to tell you which way to go (Proverbs 3:5-6). So, let’s really trust Him. And I’m sure He won’t want you to be anyone else but yourself—who He created you to be. Yes, that rare beauty that you’ve been trying to suppress. It’s the story you’ve been trying to hide, the success you don’t feel worthy of, the person who you’re afraid to be because the enemy keeps telling you you’re a fake and a fraud and that nobody will buy it or come to the event. All lies! What God gave you is valuable and needed in this world.

Perhaps it’s hard for you to believe because you’re not being true to yourself. Maybe you’re exhausted because you’re trying to be somebody else and doing it the way “they” did it. Could it be you’re feeling unsatisfied with your life because you’re not grateful for what you do have or don’t know your worth? Or maybe you’re held captive by the past.

Whatever it is, this weekend, I challenge you to do the following:

1. Ask God for direction

Don’t you think God would know a little something about you since He created you? Yes! He knows you inside and out and is waiting to give you direction if you sit still long enough to seek Him. He already knows what you want and need—He just wants a relationship with you. So, ask!

Trust the Lord completely, and don’t depend on your own knowledge. With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way. – Proverbs 3:5-6 (ERV)

 

2. Ask God to show you the way He sees you

We can feel pretty low and be frustrated at life, others, and ourselves at times. It can cause us to have a distorted view of ourselves and the world around us. But if only we saw ourselves the way God sees us, we’d be on fire every day and wouldn’t self-sabotage! If we only knew how close we are to the tide turning, how much He loves us, and how much we’re needed to make a difference, we would hold our heads a little higher, march a little longer, and have the strength to go a little farther. When God shows you and tells you who you are, it’s on!!

3. Ask God to show you what you have

If you never start, there will be no harvest. Stop complaining about what you don’t have, and look at what you do have. God will reveal it to you. Don’t miss it. If you’re not obedient in taking step one, step two won’t appear.

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)

 

 

 

My brother, an artist whose masterpieces have been showcased at places such as The Kennedy Center, painted this portrait of his new bestie. I think I’m a little biased, but he captured it beautifully! He later told me he was feeling a little down that day and was trying to figure things out before he saw the white squirrel. Isn’t that just like our God to let us know He sees us and will be there to help and cheer us up?
